Belden is one of the worlds largest manufacturer of cable and is also seen as the major innovator in the cable assembly industry. Like the Hover is to Vacuum Cleaners, Belden is to Twisted Pair Cables.
For those of us in the cable assembly business it is not uncommon to see specifications such as “a Belden style cable” meaning a twisted part of some sort. With this in mind, I am going to bring you one of their newest innovations.
In a well-established word of electrical / electronics assembly it is hard to believe the sheer number of new products that reach the market each year. Today I am introducing you to their new Digital Electricity™ Cables.
Belden Digital Electricity™ Cables allow end-users to take advantage of the Digital Electricity application, safely providing lots of power over long distances.
The cables were designed in conjunction with VoltServer, the creator of Digital Electricity, to ensure that they will support the application in all situations. Cables are available in both copper constructions for power and hybrid copper/fibre constructions to transmit power and data together over long distances in a single cable run.
How does Digital Electricity work?
According to Belden Benefits include:
• Supports sensing to detect cable problems
• Safe to touch without dangerous electrical shock
• Extended reach (thousands of feet) with mutual capacitance of <35 pF/ft to maintain power-transfer quality
• Ideal for indoor and indoor/outdoor applications
• Hybrid construction means fewer cables to stock and fewer cables to pull

One of the things that separates Belden from other manufacturers is they often design either cables in partnership with other industry manufacturers such as connector and device manufacturers so there is in many cases assurances that there will be a great end to end application for the wire.
If you are not already familiar with Belden now is a great opportunity to get to know their products a little better. There is a higher price tag associated with their production however, what you get in return is the amount of R & D that goes into their products and consistency of the build and quality of construction.
