5 Reasons you will always need a cable

I am sometimes asked the question, “will cables become redundant when wireless takes over?” The answer is that, while wireless technology is a great technology, there are some things it just can’t do. Here is my top 5:

3006092240552_ideas_connecting11:  Power

Wireless can not deliver power the way a cable can – when it comes to high  power there is no alternative to a large-gauge power cable.

2: Security

The most secure connection is still a wired one.  While wireless encryption has come a long way, it is still possable to hack a wireless connection and there is no physical trace. A wired connection is much more difficult to gain access to and you need to be in the same room to access it.

3: Multiple connections

A multicore cable can deliver a mixture of power and data in a way that wireless cannot.  The use of multicore cable is still the best way of creating a massive amount of connections in one location.

4: Distance

The world is connected by cables, yet there is a limit to the distance that wireless can deliver high speed data. Cables are the dominant medium for long distance communications – see my blog on Facebook about investing in undersea cables:

5: Reliability

There is no better connection than a wired connection. In our electrically noisy environments, with devices from mobile phones to computers and even printers vying for connectivity, wireless can be affected by all this noise.  A good old wired connection is much more robust.  Just think about how many times have you experienced weak signal from a wireless connection!

A cable is, and for the time being will be, the best way of making any connection.  Other technologies are improving and who knows what the future will bring but for now a physical connection is still the best!
