A Blog on New Molex Fibre Optic innovation

Molex have produced a brand new silica-based, 200µm hard polymer clad fibre with strength well over the industry standard – the standard is 150 kpsi and typical attenuation of ≤10 dB/km at 650 nm and ≤6 dB/km at 850 nmpolymicro_fiber_optics

The product range is aimed at the medical and harsh-environment markets.  I am particularly impressed with the high temperature version which is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 300 degrees centigrade.

There is a lot of technical information to take in with regard to this new product. “Optimized at 650 and 850 nm with typical attenuation of less than 10 and 6 dB/km, respectively, our new broad spectrum 200µm hard polymer-clad fiber features a tensile strength of well over the industry standard of 150 kpsi and minimal bend radius for high reliability,” states Imke Kuester on, business development manager at Molex, on their website. “The Polymicro 200/230 PolyClad fiber delivers superior performance coupled with resistance to harsh temperatures, chemicals and radiation that can lead to fiber degradation and shorten product life.”

This is all probably a great move by Molex as they are not generally associated with cable, let alone fibre. However, this latest move does make more sense than you might think, because there is a big requirement for manufacturers to develop complete interconnection products which include the cable.

How many times have you wanted to use a connector and thought, “ I just don’t know what cable is best for this” ? Well Molex certainly solves this problem with their comprehensive range.

There is also a video you can watch here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJGeOEe3RJM , although I hereby lay down a challenge to anyone who can watch the complete video and fully understand all the technical terms being used!

I offer a big ‘well done’ to Molex on a great range.
