Two cable innovations – revolutionary and useful (possibly)!

This week I bring you two innovations, one which could be a revolution and the other that is very useful.  Starting with TE Connectivity’s new RJ Point Five data connector system which according to the marketing information could replace the traditional RJ45 connector.RJ Point Five

So let’s take a closer look.  The port spacing is on a 7mm centerline, occupying half the space of a traditional RJ45 Ethernet link. Each cable has an integrated LED light which is transferred out through the cable boot.

Notice that I say could be a revolution, well it’s possible that this new system will bring massive space saving to traditional RJ45 deployment. It’s still limited to Cat 5e and is competing against an established interface systems that have been proven in the market for some time.

There is more info here http://www.te.com/content (PDF).

My second innovation is one that appeals to me in a big way – Reychem’s Hot-Melt tape adhesive.  I know that only a cable assembly geek like me can get excited about this type of product but hear me out.

Reychem TapeHow many times have you been working on a project where you have wanted a robust heatshrink cover but either you forget to put the heatshrink on or it’s really hard to estimate how much heartshrinck is required?

Well, there is an answer.  A hot melt tape that has adhesive lines and can withstand high temperature. How many boxes does this tick!

Such a simple product but with so many uses. You are probably thinking the same as me, why has this not been available before now?  The good news is that it’s available now.
