This is a question we are asked all the time and it is a lot easier to answer than you would think. But before I answer this question I’m going to tell a story of a conversation I had with a customer recently.
In asking for a specific type of power cable my customer asked, “How much is this going to cost?” This is the sort of question any person hates as the assumption is that whatever answer you give will either be a positive or negative response. My answer is “what do you want the cable to achieve in terms of power output and lifespan?”
At this point the customer had to consider the important factors therefore narrowing down the elements of what is required, making the conversation less about price and more about what the cable needs to be able to do.
I don’t believe in buying cheap and at the same time I only want to spend as little as possible. But many people simply don’t know what is reasonable or have any idea of what they want to pay and also have no real evidence to back up what they think and what is reality.
Just how do you know when you are paying too much or too little for a cable? The simple answer is, whatever the value of the cable is to you. For example, would you pay less for a cable but wait longer for it to arrive? Or would you accept a very short lifespan over a cable that will last for years?
When you break down what is important the true value of the cable is easier to pin down. I would also say the people providing the cable with their knowledge and expertise will go a long way to helping you make the right choice.
So you are probably wondering how my customer answered my questions and the answer is… They forgot to work out what length they need!
